About This Project

BIPOC filmmakers encounter a unique set of social barriers throughout every stage of the filmmaking process, from production to distribution. McKinsey & Company’s March report revealed that just 6% of writers, directors, and producers working on films in the United States are Black, and films led by Black producers, writers, and directors typically receive 40% less funding than other films. In Canada, while indigenous cinema has gained popularity and success in recent years, indigenous people remain vastly underrepresented in all aspects of film production. Notably, feature film production in particular lacks indigenous voices, with only five out of 310 feature films funded by Telefilm Canada from 2008-2012 created by Indigenous filmmakers, and just one out of 115 feature films supported by the Ontario Media Development Corporation between 2008-2012 created by an indigenous filmmaker. These statistics highlight the crucial importance of supporting and promoting films created by BIPOC individuals, which is precisely what BIFF aims to achieve by providing a new platform for marginalized BIPOC filmmakers to showcase their creations.
